Rap has grown to become one of the largest segments of the music industry. Generations are and have grown up listening to Rap lyrics, but moreover and especially in the more 'urban' communities taking on something of its attitude. And that attitude composed with heavy doses of machismo, is far too often openly homophobic – whether this is for effect or reflects something deep rooted. Are concerned enough about what the younger generations are thinking.
Gay rappers have always existed Queen Latifah (first female rapper to sign with a major record label) who is generally accepted to be a lesbian. However a woman with machismo is acceptable, women who likes women can even be taken positively in some quarters. For men being accepted in mainstream Rap would be difficult.
Is the world ready for the first gay rap superstar? But are we? the gay and lesbian community?
